Strategic Debriefing – Lessons from the Fire Service

By July 28, 2023Uncategorized

On a stormy summer evening, 30 firefighters worked in the pouring rain, facing a formidable adversary—a home attic fire caused by a lightning strike. The fire, tucked away in the attic space, challenged their every move, testing their teamwork and resolve.

The initial crews swiftly took charge, recognizing the urgency of the situation. With no direct access to the fire, they strategically set up a 2-1/2”  hose to the rear of the building, the C-side, aiming to knock down as much fire as possible through the gable vent. Their coordinated efforts were relentless, fighting against the flames that threatened to consume the house.

Meanwhile, another department’s crews prepared for roof operations, a vital part of the plan. But they were advised to hold back until the outside hose crews achieved a knock-down. The plan was well-thought-out, ensuring that each step of the operation was executed with precision and efficiency.

A 3d team assembled with their tools and hose at the front door. Once the roof team declared “all clear,” this team entered to provide information about the interior conditions and mitigate further fire, smoke, and water damage to the beautiful home.

As the fire roared, the firefighters displayed physical and mental strength. Despite the harsh weather and the intensity of the blaze, they stood strong, united in their determination to put the fire out. They knew that their success depended on their ability to work together, trusting in their training and the expertise of their fellow firefighters.

Once the flames were extinguished, the crews gathered for a much-needed debrief. Their hour-long conversation became an essential part of the learning process. They delved into each aspect of their response, addressing crucial questions:

  • How was the group physically and mentally?
  • What were they doing well?
  • Who performed exemplarily?
  • Which systems worked seamlessly?
  • How can our response and teamwork improve? Note: this discussion is about systems and actions. Personnel issues are discussed privately.

In this reflective discussion, they identified areas for improvement and acknowledged the exceptional efforts of their team members. They recognized the importance of continual training and knowledge development to stay ahead of challenges. The debrief served as a platform for growth, enabling them to refine their systems and enhance their firefighting capabilities.

The leadership team played a critical role in driving the improvement plan. They ensured that all the departments involved collaborated effectively, leveraging their strengths to create a more resilient firefighting force. With open communication and a shared commitment to excellence, they set the stage for even more successful firefighting endeavors in the future.

As the rain continued to fall, the firefighters left the scene with a profound sense of camaraderie and purpose. The fire may have tested their mettle, but they emerged stronger and more prepared for whatever challenges lay ahead. With each call to action, they knew they could count on the power of their teamwork, their dedication to improvement, and the bond that connected them as one united firefighting force.
