Have you ever been excited about a scheduled discovery call, only to be ghosted at the last minute?
It’s naturally frustrating, demoralizing, and can leave you feeling rejected.
But how you respond to being ghosted can make all the difference in your business success.
Let’s look at two mindsets facing this situation: Struggling and Content.
Struggling Mindset:
When Struggling gets ghosted, they feel sorry for themselves and seek sympathy on social media. They may write a post on Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn complaining about how the other person didn’t show up, or they may disappear from social media for a while to pout and take a nap. While this may feel cathartic in the moment, it’s not a productive way to spend your time.
Content Mindset:
On the other hand, Content sees being ghosted as an opportunity to focus on other things. They may use the extra time in their schedule to write, work on another project, or catch up on administrative tasks. They understand that being ghosted does not reflect their worth and don’t take it personally.
What is in your control?
When faced with being ghosted, it’s important to remember that there are things in your control and things that are not. For example, your outlook on ghosting, what you do with the time you already committed, and how you approach the person that didn’t show up are all within your control.
What is not in your control?
The other person showing up literally and figuratively is not within your control. You can’t force someone to keep their commitment or control their reasons for not showing up. It’s essential to accept this and move on.
Schedule hack for those overwhelmed:
When you are in the unfortunate situation of being ghosted, take a moment to assess your mindset. Are you approaching the situation as Struggling or Content? Then, make a mini-plan for what you’ll do with the extra time, and have substantive work ready for the next time you’re privileged to be ghosted. Remember, being ghosted is not the end of the world – it’s an opportunity to focus on other things and positively grow your business.
